„CAUGHT WAVE” „(FRAGMENT OF SOMETHING LARGER)”
Work made within the international sculpture symposium of Buzău, „Memory of Water”, 1st edition, 1st – 31st July 2022. Sculptor Georgi Minchev has two main opposing modelling concepts, based on a cube and a sphere. In the project they are combined to form two types of space: inner space and outer space. The work is composed of an oval shape forming the outer volume and silhouette, as well as the specific rhythm of work. The invisible outer spaces are surrounded by perpendicular walls, edges and corners that rise up into the stone. They are filtered through the prism of the „mathematical” formula based on the three spatial planes that make up physical space. At the same time, they recall the architectural structure of buildings, streets and squares. In some objects observed under the microscope, we see similar geometric structures. Such a structure can also be seen in a drop of water. The crystal lattices are different, depending on the region from which the water was taken, the pollution, etc. This introduces the hypothesis that water has a „memory”. By comparing in this work opposite binary elements (sphere – cube, vertical – horizontal, interior – exterior, micro – macro), he tries to present the architecture of the visible world, but also to remind of other pairs of opposites, located in the emotional world, thanks to which our life is so unique, full of joy and sadness. Georgi Minchev was born in 1965, he holds a Master’s degree in sculpture and theoretical disciplines from St. Cyril University, Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria (1991), and he is a professor in sculpture and theoretical disciplines at the same university. He is the head of the Department of Sculpture and a member of UBA, Bulgaria. He often uses contrasting geometric shapes, such as spheres and cubes. As a result of the technology developed in the modern world, Minchev believes that visual perception is evolving more quickly and that these shapes provoke natural human reactions and rely on them in their own practice. His favourite material is stone and he has participated in over 20 solo exhibitions and won several awards for his creativity. He has been exhibited internationally in group exhibitions in countries such as Taiwan, Belgium, Bulgaria, Romania, China, Japan, USA.
