„PETRE AND HRISULA ZANGOPOL” SECONDARY SCHOOL NO. 10
On 1st June 1932, Buzău City Hall decided to build a school in Mihai Viteazul Neighborhood, to cope with the increased number of children in the neighbourhood, who needed to learn. Until then, in this working-class neighbourhood, established in 1923, on the former City Estate, for demobilized people of the First World War and civil servants, a school with 4 teachers had been operating in two rented houses. In addition to the funds allocated by the city hall, a substantial amount of money (120,000 lei) was donated by Petre V. Zangopol, an important industrialist of the time, owner of "P.V. Zangopol Automatic Mill", who requested that the school be named after him and his wife Hrisula. The inauguration took place on 5th October 1935 in the presence of the Minister of Public Instruction and Religious Affairs, Dr. Constantin Angelescu, the prefect of the county, C. Tegăneanu, the mayor of the city, Stan Săraru, parliamentarians, local authorities and a large audience. At the inauguration of the school, the great philanthropist concluded his speech as follows: "I want the generations that shall pass through the benches of this school to know that today's donors did this work out of sincere love for the Romanian people and concern for its future. I wish this people full of virtues the most brilliant development." The school, built by "Impresare Italiene al Estero" Society, made of brick and covered with tin, had four classrooms, a chancellery, two entrance halls for teachers and students, a large hall for the recreation of students during the winter and for performances, a room and pantry for servants, a well with concrete pipes. The school premises suffered serious damage following the earthquake of November 1940, the bombings of the Soviet aviation in the summer of 1941, but also as a result of the explosion of the Saturn ammunition depot, located nearby and blown up by a group of saboteurs. The school was rebuilt with the support of the local authorities and the voluntary work of the residents of the neighbourhood. In 1943, the school had over 600 students, in primary and extracurricular courses, with 4 classrooms, a canteen for 60 students, patronized by Hrisula Zangopol, a school cooperative, a vegetable garden, a museum and a pharmacy. In 1957 two more classrooms were built, and in 1961 a gym. In 1961, the school changed its name from School No. 8 into Elementary School No. 10. Currently General School No. 10 of Mihai Viteazul neighbourhood was named "Petre and Hrisula Zangopol" Secondary School No. 10.
