„GEORGE EMIL PALADE” SECONDARY SCHOOL
The construction of "George Emil Palade" Secondary School of Buzău began in 1967 and it was completed in the summer of 1968, after the administrative reform by which the municipality of Buzău became the seat of Buzău County. So, on 15th September 1968, this education institution entered into operation, which was originally called General School No. 15 - Buzău. The press of the time recorded in "Viaţa Buzăului" newspaper: "The school opens its doors for the first time ... It is a tall, slender building, with rooms bathed in sunlight. General School No. 15, Crâng is among the largest general schools in our municipality. It has 24 classrooms where over 800 students study. Among them, 28 who are only 6 years old form a special class. The Economic High School will also operate here." The project manager of the construction was architect S. Petrescu. The land related to the building was 13,000 sq. m., to which 800 sq. m. is added, for experimental lots The school consisted of: 24 classrooms, a physics laboratory with storage, a chemistry laboratory with storage, 2 workshops with storage, a chancellery, secretariat, principal's office, library, medical office, dental office, teaching material room, headquarters for the party and union, 2 warehouses, personal changing room, 6 student toilets, a private toilet. The location of the construction of the school was made on the land where the agricultural farm of the Normal School for Boys used to be (today "Spiru Haret" National Pedagogical High School) on an area of approximately 2.5 acres, more precisely on the place where the vineyard, the vegetable garden and the stables of this school had been. General School No. 15, would teach the population from Micro 12 neighbourhood, that is, from the area of Nicolae Bălcescu, Spiru Haret and Unirii boulevards, area in full development. The school is located on 8 Spiru Haret street, at a distance of almost 1 km from Ploiesti barrier, the main entrance to the city from Bucharest, near the famous Crâng park, between N. Bălcescu and Unirii boulevards, in the centre of the large district of blocks that make up Crâng and Unirii neighbourhood. In its immediate proximity there are the sports club and "Spiru Haret" National Pedagogical High School. On 10th October 1974, George Emil Palade (19th November 1912, Iași – 8th October 2008, Del Mar, United States of America), the spiritual patron of the school, received the Nobel Prize for Medicine. The American scholar of Romanian origin studied in Buzău in the period 1921-1929, where his father, the eminent pedagogue Emil Palade, had been appointed professor and principal of the Department of Pedagogy of the Normal School for Boys. George Emil Palade, an outstanding student in all his school years, passed the baccalaureate exam in 1929 at "Alexandru Hâjdeu" High School as top of his class, after which he attended the Faculty of Medicine of Bucharest, obtaining his doctorate in Medicine in 1940. He made fundamental discoveries in the field of cell biology, especially the ultrastructure, revealed with the help of the electron microscope. On the medical level, his investigations focused on the research of the structure and transport formations of the blood walls.
