THE MONUMENT OF GLOBE-TROTTER DAN DUMITRU
Dumitru Dan was born in Buhuşi, in Bacău county, on 14th July 1890. He worked for 30 years as a geography teacher in Brăila and Buzău. Dumitru Dan was the first Romanian globe-trotter. At the beginning of the last century, being a student in Paris at the Faculty of Geography, he walked around the world, covering in 6 years, between 1910 and 1916, 100,000 kilometres, in peasant sandals and in traditional costume. Due to the outbreak of the First World War, Dumitru Dan only finished the route in 1923, receiving the 100,000 francs, which were now greatly devalued, representing only 8% of the amount from the beginning of the competition. Dumitru Dan was the only Romanian who finished the competition. He settled in Buzău, got married and had four children. His performance remained unequalled, being entered in the Guinness World Records in 1985. The trip was carried out on 5 continents, across 3 oceans, through 74 countries, 30 colonies and through more than 1,500 cities. He broke 497 pairs of peasant sandals and 28 national suits. He died at the age of 90, in Buzău on 4th December 1978 and he was buried in the Heroes' Cemetery of Buzău. In 2017, his bust was unveiled in the cemetery.
