MEMORIAL TO THE 48TH BUZĂU INFANTRY REGIMENT
The 48th Buzău Infantry Regiment was established in 1914, on the structure of the 8th Buzău Infantry Regiment, as part of the 26th Infantry Brigade of 13th Infantry Division of Ploiești. The majority of the regiment were reservists of Buzău county. The regiment received its baptism of fire in the night attack on the Rotenberg hill, near Sibiu, on 09th/22nd September 1916, when 22 officers and 1150 NCOs and troops died, the regimental commander himself being seriously wounded. The regiment then fought in the Olt Gorge and continued its epic at Mărășești in the summer of 1917, culminating in the counterattack of Pădurea Răzoare. He then took part in the battles on Muncelul Hill, after which he was withdrawn and sent to restore and complete, in the Deleni-Maxut area, Iași county, where he was decimated by exanthematous typhus. He was subsequently deployed to the 13th Infantry Division in southern Bessarabia to secure this territory. He returned to Buzău garrison on 23rd December 1919.
The memorial in Crâng Park, with the names of the 775 heroes of the 48th Buzău Infantry Regiment inlaid on it, was created by Buzău Town Hall and unveiled on 1st December 2020, when a pedunculate oak tree was planted for each hero, bearing their name.
