MALAXA STEAM LOCOMOTIVE, BUILT IN 1936, MONUMENT DEDICATED TO RAILWAYMEN AND ENGINEERS OF BUZĂU
Following his participation in the Development Council of Buzău (where 40 citizens of the city were invited to participate in the elaboration of a development strategy for the city for the next 12 years), the engineer Ștefan Mihai (1955 – 2019), proposed to mark in 2020, the 150th anniversary of the activity of the Romanian Railways in Buzău, as on 14th October 1870, the ruler Carol I (king since 1881) arrived with the first train set to Buzău, opening the first railway line Bucharest – Buzău, designed up to Galați (Strousberg concession – Germany), by placing in front of Buzău station a locomotive belonging to the national cultural heritage. In the same year, the Rolling stock repair workshop in Buzău (since 1881, the C.F.R. depot) was established, thus becoming the first factory in the city. Other enthusiasts of the phenomenon, engineers Radu Bellu, Marius Rusu and Mr Marius-Adrian Nicoară or Alfred Vasilescu, also joined the project. The Malaxa steam locomotive with series 50.659, tender 50.805, manufactured in 1936 at the Malaxa Factories, with number 201/1936, located in front of Buzău Railway Station, is part of the national cultural heritage, being one of the technical achievements of the time of its commissioning. Buzău Town Hall, through the construction of this monument, pays tribute to the railwaymen of past and present of Buzău, who have contributed and continue to contribute to the development of our city and to the engineers of Buzău, who celebrate the Romanian Engineers’ Day on 14th September every year. The monument was inaugurated on 11th September 2020.
