MEAT AND FISH MARKET HALL FROM „STAN SÁRARU” MARKET ARCHITECT DUILIU MARCU (1885-1966)
The Central Square in Buzău is linked to the name of the mayor Stan Săraru (1898-1985), one of the city’s mayors (1933-1937) with impressive urban achievements. At the beginning of the 1930s, out of the desire to build a modern agro-food market in Buzău, through a series of expropriations of public utility for which the City Hall paid considerable sums, the current space of the Central Market, located between Carol I street (current Independence Street) and Unirii Boulevard, near Sfinții Îngeri Church. The designer of the work and site manager was the architect Duiliu Marcu (1885-1966), graduate of the School of Fine Arts of Paris, professor at Ion Mincu Institute of Architecture, member of Romanian Academy (since 1955) who remained in the history of Romanian architecture for his style which combines the traditional with the modern style, with notoriety in the design and construction of some iconic buildings, including the Library and Theater of Timisoara, the Unirii Square of Oradea, the Elisabeta Palace, the Romanian Railways Palace, the Library of the Romanian Academy, the Victoria Palace, the building of the Higher War School of Bucharest (Military Academy). The project included a meat hall with 21 booths, another fish hall with 10 booths, a food hall and another poultry hall, restaurant, post office, milk counter, 47 fruit booths and related facilities. The works contract was concluded on 4th September 1934 with „Edilitatea” Company of Bucharest, and the final acceptance of the work took place on 4th May 1936. In 2004, after the renovation of the buildings and spaces of the Central Market, it was named after mayor Stan Săraru.
