„1907” STATUARY GROUP
The 1907 Peasants’ Revolt of Buzău was one of the bloodiest episodes, with 11 peasants shot dead (8 in Buzău and 3 in Râmnicu Sărat) and another 11 wounded. In 1961, it was decided to place, in the capitals of the regions, statuary groups commemorating the peasants’ sacrifice in 1907. Since in the Ploiesti Region, which at that time included the former Buzău and Râmnicu Sărat counties, most of the victims were recorded here, it was decided that this statuary group should be placed in the city of Buzău.
The „1907” statuary group is the work of artist Corneliu Medrea (1888-1964). He attended the School of Decorative Arts of Budapest (1909-1912), and from 1939-1964 he was a professor of sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts (later „Nicolae Grigorescu” Institute of Fine Arts) of Bucharest. In 1955 he was elected correspondent member of the Romanian Academy.
In addition to numerous busts of political and artistic personalities, placed in many places in the country, Corneliu Medrea is the author, together with Ion Jalea, of the Monument to the Railway Heroes of Bucharest (1923) and of the „Cup of Glory” bas-reliefs at the Mausoleum of Mărășești (1930).
