„ION ANDREESCU – 150 YEARS OF IMPRESSIONISM” PHOTO GALLERY
Ion Andreescu, (born on the 15th of February 1850 in Bucharest – died on the 22nd/23rd of October 1882 in Bucharest), painter and pedagogue, post-mortem member of the Romanian Academy, was born into a wealthy family, being the first of seven children of Andrei Dobrescu and Anastasia Pencovici.
He attended the primary courses at the private pension of Andreas Apostolas, then the "Lazăr" Gymnasium and the "Saint Sava" College, and from 1869, the National School of Fine Arts, founded in 1864 and led by Theodor Aman.
In 1872 he became a teacher of linear drawing and calligraphy at the Episcopal Seminary in Buzău. The following year he transferred to the "Tudor Vladimirescu" Communal Secondary School (the current "Bogdan Petriceicu Hasdeu" National College), and in 1875, to the Vocational School (the current Agricultural College "Dr. Constantin Angelescu") from the same locality.
Stimulated by the exhibition opened in Bucharest in January 1873 by the "Friends of the Fine Arts" organization, Ion Andreescu, a fine observer of the surrounding realities, created memorable works with themes and elements related to the Buzău area, managing to reproduce in his canvases real historical images: the hustle and bustle of the former fair, images of the surrounding villages (landscapes from the fair and Crâng Forest, portraits, vases of flowers), his time in Buzău being the period in which he matured as a man and an artist. Among the paintings made in Buzău, the following stand out: Currants, Shepherd with Sheep, House in the Orchard, House of the Siever, Houses in Winter, House on the Road, Edge of the Village, Winter in the Forest (the Crâng Forest), Fair near Buzău (Drăgaica), Winter in the Grove, Woodcutter in the forest, Leafless grove, Winter and Early spring.
In 1879, helped by the people of Buzău, he went to Paris, where he attended the classes of the private art academy, the "Julian" Academy. In the summer he painted in Barbizon and other rural settlements. Here he would meet Nicolae Grigorescu.
He died at only 32 years old, in full artistic maturity, thus disappearing the greatest artist that the country has ever had, as stated by another in love with the beauties of Buzău lands, Nicolae Grigorescu.
The “Ion Andreescu – 150 Years of Immpressionism” photo gallery was inaugurated by the municipality on the 15th of April 2024, in the “Unirii” Underpass, in Buzău.
