THE HEADQUARTERS OF THE 2ND INFANTRY DIVISION "GETICA" BUZĂU
In the summer of 1916, Romania entered the First World War alongside the Entente states. By High Royal Decree, signed by King Ferdinand of Romania, on the night of August 14th to 15th 1916, three Romanian armies were established to be engaged in the strategic operation to liberate Transylvania. General Alexandru Averescu was appointed to the command of the 2nd Romanian Army, under whose leadership it was covered in glory in the battles of Mărăști in the summer of 1917.
At the outbreak of the Second World War, large units of the 2nd Romanian Army were engaged in battles both in the Eastern and Western Campaigns.
In 1960, the 2nd Romanian Army was re-established in the Bucharest garrison, and on the 5th of April 1980, its Command was deployed in the Buzău garrison. Its area of responsibility included the eastern and southeastern operational areas (Muntenia, Moldova and Dobrogea) and it had three large mechanized units and weapon units as subordinate structures.
The construction of the headquarters of the 2nd Romanian Army began on the 15th of June 1981, by a detachment of military construction workers led by engineer major Constantin Stepanov, and was completed in December 1982, being considered, at the time, the most modern and imposing building in the city of Buzău.
On the 30th of March 2000, the transformation of the 2nd Romanian Army Command into the 2nd Combined Operational Command began, which was awarded the Battle Flag and the honorary name "Marshal Alexandru Averescu". This headquarters exercised command and operational control of all national contingents participating in operations in support of peace in multinational structures and in the framework of multinational cooperation initiatives.
In 2010 the Joint Operational Command "Marshal Alexandru Averescu" was transformed into the 2nd Infantry Division "Getica", taking over the traditions of the 2nd Romanian Army and the structures that succeeded it. In 2017, in a lavish ceremony at the Mausoleum of Romanian Heroes in Mărăşeşti, the Battle Flag of the 2nd Infantry Division "Getica" was conferred the National Order "Faithful Service" in the rank of Knight, with insignia of peace, by the President of Romania.
