„BOGDAN PETRICEICU HASDEU” NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
Bogdan Petriceicu Hasdeu" National High School is the best-known high school education institution in the city of Buzău. It was founded in 1867, the building being built on land that belonged to Banu Monastery, and it was initially called "Tudor Vladimirescu" Secondary School until 1875, when it received the name "Alexandru Hâjdeu". Since 1932, the institution is called Bogdan Petriceicu Hasdeu. In 1873 Basil Iorgulescu established the first library in the city here. Also with his support, in 1895 the first public museum-type collection in the city was inaugurated at this high school, consisting of archaeological, anthropological and historical pieces. On 9th September 1920, a commemorative marble plaque was unveiled, fixed to the left of the amphitheatre door of the high school by "Buzău Student Circle", in memory of the comrades who died in the Campaign for the nation's union of 1916-1919, on which the names of 4 heroes are inscribed, former high school graduates. Bogdan Petriceicu Hasdeu was born on 26th February 1838, in Cristineşti, Hotin, today in Ukraine, and died in 1907 in Câmpina. Writer, philologist, historian, encyclopedist, jurist, linguist, folklorist, publicist, politician, academician, he was one of the greatest personalities of Romanian culture of all time. The bust of the great scientist was made of bronze by sculptor Oscar Han and it was installed in 1932 in front of the high school. Among the great personalities who graduated from this high school, we mention George Emil Palade, laureate of the Nobel Prize and the academicians Marius Andruh or Ştefan Vencov. The building of "Bogdan Petriceicu Hasdeu" National High School is included in the List of Historical Monuments (BZ-II-m-B-02326).
