THE BUST OF MARSHAL ALEXANDRU AVERESCU
Alexandru Averescu was born on 3rd April 1859 in Babele place, near Ismail, in southern Bessarabia, and died on 2nd December 1938 in Bucharest. He had an exceptional military career. Between 1894 and 1896 he was commander of the Military Academy. He was Romania’s military attaché in Berlin (1896-1898) and head of the General Headquarters (1911-1913). In 1913 he took part in the Second Balkan War, leading the Romanian offensive on Bulgarian territory as far as Sofia. He was commander of the Second Romanian Army in the War of National Reunification (1916-1919), the architect of victories at Mărăști and Oituz in the summer of 1917. He was also Prime Minister of Romania three times (January-March 1918, 1920-1921, 1926-1927). In 1918 he founded the People’s League (which became the People’s Party in 1920) and in 1930 he was promoted to the rank of Marshal of Romania. He is the author of remarkable military studies and a volume of memoirs from the front line. He was decorated with „Michael the Brave” Order and he was elected honorary member of the Romanian Academy. His bronze bust is the work of artist Valentin Tănase and it was unveiled in 2018 at the crossing point between „Nicolae Bălcescu” and „Stadionului” Boulevards, in front of the entrance to Crâng Park.
