MARGHILOMAN ESTATE ENSEMBLE
Born in Buzău on 27th January 1854, as the first son of the politician Ion (Iancu) Marghiloman, Alexandru Marghiloman was a prominent figure in Romanian political life from the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, a member of the Conservative Party, where he also held the leadership of the party. He was a minister in several governments when the Conservatives were in power. At the beginning of the War of National Integration (1916 – 1919) he declared for Romania’s neutrality, disagreeing with our entry into the war alongside Russia. After the withdrawal of the Royal House, the Romanian authorities and the army in Moldova, in the fall of 1916, while he remained in Bucharest in the temporarily occupied territory, he was appointed by King Ferdinand to create on 20th February/5th March 1918 the government to sign the preliminary peace treaty with the Central Powers. The treaty, which imposed particularly difficult conditions on Romania, was not ratified by King Ferdinand, a delayed procedure in good agreement with Alexandru Marghiloman, who appreciated that, in the meantime, the situation on the front had changed in favour of Romania. As prime minister, on 27th March 1918, Marghiloman received, in Chișinău, the Declaration of the Council of the Country on the union of Bessarabia with Romania, later starting the steps to achieve the union with Bucovina. After the end of the war, Alexandru Marghiloman did not enjoy, as he deserved, the recognition of his political sacrifice and, although he saved the Country, the Crown and the Army at a crucial moment in Romania’s history, he was no longer a visible presence on the political scene. He died on 10th May 1925, at his villa of Buzău, and he was buried on 13th May 1925, in Bellu cemetery of Bucharest. On 27th March 2018, when 100 years were celebrated since the Union of Bessarabia with Romania, the great politician Alexandru Marghiloman from Buzău was definitively reinstated, by unveiling an imposing statue in the park that bears his name. The initiative belonged to Mr. Constantin Toma, the mayor of Buzău, a declared admirer of the great politician and a passionate promoter of authentic values of Buzău, an achievement circumscribed to the events dedicated to the Centenary of Great Romania. The work was created by artist Ciprian Dominoschi from Buzău, a teacher at „Margareta Sterian” Arts High School of Buzău. On the Marghiloman Estate in the municipality of Buzău, apart from the statue, there are historical monuments such as: Marghiloman Palace also known as Albatros Villa, Annex buildings, Marghiloman Mansion Stables, Marghiloman Mansion Wall, Marghiloman Mansion Cross and Alexandru Marghiloman Park. The ensemble is included on the List of Historical Monuments (BZ-II-a-B-02347).
