PUBLIC (COMMUNAL) BATHROOM
For the first time, a public bath in Buzău is mentioned in the topographic sketch of the city in 1830, made in 1890 by Basil Iorgulescu. The Turkish bath was then located on the site where the Synagogue was later built. Another public bath, owned by Pavel Cătănescu, is mentioned in the second half of the 19th century. In 1922, the Central Bath is mentioned, located behind the Jewish Community School, on Alexandru Marghiloman Street.
In 1936, the Joint Stock Company "Băile comunale Buzău" was established, in a memorial drawn up to the City Hall, mentioning that the existing bath was insufficient for the 40,000 inhabitants of the city. The new communal bathroom was built between 1936-1938, in place of some of the shops of the Gârlași Hospital, and was officially inaugurated on the 17th of February 1940. The plans of the building were drawn up by the architect Duiliu Marcu, from Bucharest, the works being supervised by Dimitrie Glodeanu and the engineer Alexandru Georgescu.
The architect Duiliu Marcu (1885–1966) studied at the School of Fine Arts in Paris. He was a professor at the "Ion Mincu" Institute of Architecture in Bucharest, a full member (since 1955) of the Romanian Academy and honorary president of the Union of Romanian Architects. He combined the tradition of national architecture with modern architecture. Between 1912-1913 he participated, together with the architect Nicolae Ghica-Budeşti, in the construction of the University of Bucharest.
He was one of the prominent and prolific architects of interwar Romania, designing a series of reference buildings: the Polytechnic in Timișoara (1920-1923), the Theater in Timișoara (1923-1928), the Elisabeta Palace in Bucharest (1930-1937), the Romanian Railways - CFR Palace (1934-1937), the Palace of State Monopolies (1934-1941), the renovation and expansion of the Athenée Palace Hotel (1935-1937), the Library of the Romanian Academy (1936-1938), the Higher War School or the Military Academy (1937-1939), and the Victoria Palace, (1937-1944).
In Buzău, the architect Duiliu Marcu also designed the "Avocat Stan Săraru" Square in Buzău (1934-1935) and probably the Education Pavilion of the Ziliştea-Boboc Buzău Aviation School (1941-1944).
