ARCHBISHOP'S ENSEMBLE
Buzău County has one of the oldest and most important eparchial centres of the Romanian Orthodox Church, the Archdiocese of Buzău and Vrancea, which has its residence in Buzău. The Diocese of Buzău was founded around 1500, by ruler Radu the Great (1495- 1508) and Saint Nephon II, former Patriarch of Constantinople, with jurisdiction over the counties of Buzău, Râmnicu Sărat, Brăila and Săcuieni. The Archbishop's Ensemble includes: "Dormition of the Mother of God" voivodal cathedral, which was founded by ruler Matei Basarab (1632-1654) in 1649, on the place of the one founded earlier by ruler Radu the Great (1495-1508) and his descendants; "Saints Emperors Constantine and Helen" Archbishop's Chapel, built in 1841 by Bishop Chesarie (1825-1846); The Archbishop's Palace, which was built by Constantin Brâncoveanu (1688-1714) and later rebuilt; The old building of "Chesarie the Bishop" Orthodox Theological Seminary (1838), built by Bishop Chesarie for his most important school - it now houses the Diocesan Church Museum; "Ascension of Jesus" and "Three Holy Hierarchs" Archbishop's Cathedral, built in 2009 by Archbishop Epifanie Norocel.
The Archbishop's Ensemble is included in the List of Historical Monuments (BZ-II-a-A-02324).
