THE STATUE OF PAINTER ION ANDREESCU
Ioan Andreescu was born in 1850, in Bucharest, in a privileged family, being the first of the seven children of Andrei Dobrescu and Anastasia Pencovici. He attended primary school at the private boarding school of Andreas Apostolas, „Lazăr” Gymnasium, then „Sfântu Sava” High School of Bucharest. From 1869 he attended the „National School of Fine Arts” (founded in 1864), directed by Theodor Aman. From 1872 he was a professor at Linear Drawing and Calligraphy Section of the Episcopal Seminary of Buzău. In 1873 he moved to „Tudor Vladimirescu” Gymnasium, then in 1875 to the Crafts School of Buzău. Before going to study in Paris, Ion Andreescu painted some of his best known works, including „The Oak „, „Drăgaică Fair”, „Buzău Market”, „Street in Buzău”. „The Oak” is one of the painter’s masterpieces and it can be considered an artistic testimony of the old Codrii Vlăsiei that once covered a large part of Buzău region. Ion Andreescu died at the age of 32, in Bucharest, on 22nd October 1882, of tuberculosis. In 1948 he was elected posthumously member of the Romanian Academy.
