„BIG CATCH / THE FISHERMEN”
Work made within the international sculpture symposium of Buzău, „Memory of Water”, 1st edition, 1st – 31st July 2022. In the project by Kirill Grekov, two fishermen are shown casting nets with a big catch. Their boat hangs in the air and the surrounding space becomes water. The viewer looks up at them, becoming complicit in the process. The sculpture becomes a symbol of fertility, prosperity and good luck. Fishing is one of the oldest human occupations. The Buzău River preserves the memory of the first fishing expeditions in its waters. Kirill Grekov was born in Estonia in 1987. He began studying sculpture as a child, in search of a classical art education. In 2007 he went to study at the Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg. He adopted deep traditions and skills from the teachers of one of the best academic schools in the world. He works in various techniques and materials: bronze, wood, stone, often combining them. The material is not an end in itself for him, the main thing is to see the work that is already hidden in a block of stone or wood. His works are distinguished by their original composition, harmony of lines and volumes. His bronze works are full of mythological themes and fictional characters from the author’s world.
