BUZĂU TRAIN STATION OF ROMANIAN RAILWAYS
On 14th October 1870, Prince Carol I (king since 1881) and his suite arrived by train in Buzău, inaugurating Bucharest – Buzău – Galați Romanian Railways line. In the same year, the Buzău Rolling Stock Repair Workshop was established (since 1881, the Romanian Railways Depot). This was followed by the construction of Buzău – Făurei – Mărășești railway, then Buzău – Nehoiașu railway and several segments of the narrow gage railway in the mountain area of the county. With the completion, in 1873, of the city’s train station, Buzău became an important railway junction. Over time, education, industry and a hospital for the many railway personnel who worked here were added to these railway objectives in Buzău. All this led to a sustained development of the city and county of Buzău, at the end of the 19th century. In Buzău train station, between 1894-1895, the writer Ion Luca Caragiale opened a restaurant, but without success. In December 1916, when the royal family, the Government of Romania and the Great Headquarters of the Romanian Army were stationed for a few days in the city of Buzău, on the way to Moldova, in the restaurant of Buzău Train Station, a party was organized to mark the promotion of Crown Prince Carol II to the rank of major. Buzău train station was renovated several times, the last time between 2006-2010. A unique memorial plaque (unveiled in 2015) is the one placed above the entrance to Buzău Train Station, in memory of the famous Eagle Ilie, a rare species of eagle that lived for almost 20 years, until the Second World War, in the area of Buzău Train Station, becoming a real symbol for the city. In 2020, a Romanian Malaxa locomotive, manufactured in 1936, was installed in front of Buzău train station, on the initiative of the City Hall, to mark the 150th anniversary of the railway in Buzău.
