Buzău County Museum is the main museum institution of Buzău County. It currently operates in the building of the former Normal high school for girls, built in 1920. Its foundations were laid by Basil Iorgulescu, eminent scholar and teacher, author of reference works in the field of local history and geography, the development of the collections leading to several stages of expansion. The building is shared with George Ciprian Theater and County Culture and Art Center. The museum heritage contains artefacts from the Stone Age, the Bronze Age (Monteoru Culture), the Iron Age and the 1st Millennium, the Middle Ages and the pre-modern era. Here there is a replica of Pietroasa Treasury. The Memorial – History Department has a sector that contains exhibits from the modern and contemporary era, another one dedicated to Buzău culture (men of culture, athletes, politicians, etc.). A collection of vintage telephones with over 200 Romanian and foreign telephones – the oldest from 1898 – and a collection of numismatics represent points of real attraction for visitors. The fine art collection includes works of ceramics, glass, the most important collection of contemporary tapestry in Romania, collages with folk motifs, painting and graphic works, silver jewellery and other alloys, sculptures – brought together in the form of Contemporary Decorative Art collections : „Brăduţ Covaliu”, „Bucur and Margareta Chiriac”, „Luiza Asavetei”, „Margareta Sterian”. In 2017, Buzău County Museum held the exhibition „Around the world on foot. The story of 497 pairs of peasant sandals”, dedicated to the first Romanian globe-trotter, Dumitru Dan, who, while a student in Paris, went around the world on foot, covering, in 6 years, between 1910 and 1916, 100,000 kilometres, wearing peasant sandals and traditional Romanian costume. The building of County Museum is included on the List of Historical Monuments (BZ-II-m-B-02317).
