THE BOOK OF HEROES
The Book of Heroes, was placed at the initiative of Buzău City Hall, in the yard of Heroes' Church and Cemetery of Buzău in the context of the celebration of the Centenary of the Great Union, and it has an explanatory text inscribed in Romanian and in three foreign languages, which reads as follows: "The church dedicated to "All Saints" and the "Heroes' Cemetery" of Buzău were built with the contribution of the militaries and their families after the First World War and they were inaugurated in 1931. They pay tribute to 70 heroes of Buzău region who fell in the line of duty in the War of Independence (1877 – 1878), 12 heroes of Buzău county of the Second Balkan War (1913), alongside the heroes who sacrificed themselves in the War for the Nation's Union (1916 – 1919). Here rest, equal in the face of death, 9,653 unknown heroes of the First World War, belonging to both belligerent camps, the Entente and the Central Powers. Its overwhelming size, built on tears, blood and heroism, makes this necropolis the largest cemetery of heroes in Romania and one of the most important cemeteries of unknown heroes in Europe. Under these gravestones there are 8,001 Romanian militaries, 753 German militaries, 744 Austro-Hungarian militaries, 136 Russian and Bulgarian militaries, 14 Turkish militaries and 5 Italian militaries, who fought until their last breath for the ideals of their homeland. Over time, 155 heroes from the city of Buzău, 968 Germans and 392 Soviets from the Second World War (1941 – 1945) were also buried here. This necropolis also honours 67 victims of the communist regime, 47 heroes of the Revolution of December 1989, militaries who sacrificed themselves for the country in domestic missions and 3 heroes from Buzău who gave their life for the country in foreign theatres of military operations. Their sacrifice made us who we are. Our respect for them is a sign of hope for a better world. Their courage and supreme sacrifice inspire us today. This historical military and religious platform transmits over time to Europe, to the whole world, the most approved message of world peace. May they rest in peace!
