THE PERIMETER WALL OF THE HEROES' CHURCH AND CEMETERY
The 5th Infantry Division was the large unit that had its garrison in the city of Buzău. The religious service of the division was established on 1st November 1924, with soldiers attending religious services in the churches of the city. The staff of the garrison decided to build their own church through public subscription, collections and other philanthropic actions. The church was consecrated on 25th March 1929, the feast of the Annunciation, by the bishop of the army, Stroe, and the bishop of Buzău, Ghenadie, in the presence of a large audience. It followed the initiative of the militaries to build the Heroes' Cemetery in the courtyard of the Heroes' Church. General Nicolae Uică, the successor of General Traian Epure at the command of the 5th Infantry Division, who was also the president of the local branch of the "Cult of Heroes" Society, started the works for the establishment of this collector cemetery. The ceremony of inauguration of the cemetery, which took place on 8th October 1931, was attended by, apart from the army from the garrison, a large public and members of the "Military Virtue of War" association, as well as by high officials of the time: King Carol II, Prime Minister Nicolae Iorga, Bishop Ghenadie Niculescu of Buzău, General Constantin Ştefănescu-Amza, Minister of War, General Marcel Olteanu, Inspector of the Army. The fencing of the Heroes' Church and Cemetery, on a distance of 200 meters, is made of concrete slabs on which the Cross of War and Crossing of the Danube medals are represented.
